You must book — even in a car
The single most important thing about South Lanarkshire's sites is that **you must book a visit in advance before arriving**. That applies whatever you are driving — this is not a van-only rule, and a car with a boot of cardboard needs a slot the same as anything else.
It catches people out constantly, particularly anyone who has used a neighbouring council's sites. In North Lanarkshire a car can simply turn up; in South Lanarkshire it cannot.
A slot has to be booked before you start loading, not after — or we lift the load without one. The two sites people ask us about most have their own pages: East Kilbride recycling centre and Cambuslang and Rutherglen recycling centre.
- Booking required for every visit
- Applies to cars, not just vans
- Tipper vehicles refused outright
- Hours vary site to site
- South Lanarkshire residents only
- Book before you load the car
Tippers are not allowed
**Tipper vehicles are refused at South Lanarkshire sites.** If you have hired a tipper for a garden or building project — which is a common choice for soil and rubble because it saves shovelling — you cannot bring it to a council site.
That leaves the material with nowhere obvious to go, and it is one of the more common reasons people ring us mid-project. Heavy inert (the heavy stuff — rubble, concrete, brick and soil) waste is priced by weight rather than volume, which usually works out better for the customer anyway — see soil removal and concrete and rubble removal.
Other vehicle rules and site hours differ between the sites themselves, so check the specific centre you plan to use rather than assuming they run alike.
Booked up, or driving a tipper?
Neither is our problem — we are the licensed carrier. Hamilton to Lanark, fixed price from a photo.
What the sites take
The standard household streams: garden waste, timber, metal, rubble, card and paper, plastics, glass, textiles and electricals under WEEE (anything with a plug or a battery), including fridges and freezers.
Refused: asbestos, gas cylinders, bulk chemicals and solvents, clinical waste and quantities of tyres. Our hazardous and special waste page sets out the right route for each.
Trade waste is not accepted. Household sites are funded for residents' household waste, and trade waste needs a licensed carrier with a duty-of-care transfer note.
For what goes in which bin at home, our South Lanarkshire bin colours guide covers the blue, light grey, burgundy and black or green bins.
When to use the tip, and when not to
If you can get a slot and it is a car load, use the tip. It is free and it is the right answer for small amounts. We are not going to argue otherwise.
The calculation changes when the slots you want are gone, when you would need several visits, when you are driving something the site will not accept, or when the load is heavy enough that you will be lifting it twice. And it changes completely for anything a car cannot hold — a suite, a wardrobe, a fridge-freezer, a shed's worth of timber.
We work right across South Lanarkshire — Hamilton, East Kilbride, Rutherglen, Cambuslang, Blantyre, Lanark and Carluke — with no booking, no permit and no vehicle restrictions, because we are the licensed carrier rather than the visitor. We carry it out ourselves, including from upstairs, and issue a transfer note every time.
Loads start at £100 + VAT. See rubbish removal in East Kilbride, house clearance or garage clearance.
