Shieldhall at a glance
Shieldhall Recycling Centre is on Renfrew Road, G51, serving Glasgow's south west — Govan, Cardonald, Hillington, Craigton and Ibrox. It is open seven days a week, 8am to 6pm, with last entry at 5.45pm.
For car users it is straightforward and open as normal. The complication is vans.
As always, check the council's recycling centres page before travelling. Van arrangements in particular have changed more than once.

The van position
Shieldhall is **temporarily closed to householders using vans**. Glasgow City Council is directing residents with vans to Dawsholm Household Waste Recycling Centre instead.
That is a real inconvenience if you live in the south west. Dawsholm is at 75 Dalsholm Road, G20 0TB, in the north west of the city — a cross-city trip from Govan or Cardonald, and only inside its van windows of 08:00–11:30 and 13:30–16:45.
It also means Glasgow currently has effectively one site accepting residential vans, because Polmadie refuses them outright and Easter Queenslie is closed for redevelopment. One van-accepting site for a city of 600,000 people is worth knowing before you hire a vehicle.
The rules elsewhere in Scotland are covered in can you take a van to a Scottish recycling centre.
South west, van load, nowhere to go?
Skip the trip to Dawsholm. We come to you across Govan, Cardonald and Pollok, and load it ourselves.
What Shieldhall takes
The standard household streams: garden waste, timber, metal, rubble and hardcore, card and paper, plastics, glass, textiles, and electricals under WEEE (anything with a plug or a battery) including fridges and freezers, which are degassed at a licensed facility.
Refused, as at every Glasgow site: asbestos, gas cylinders, bulk chemicals and solvents, clinical waste and quantities of tyres. Our hazardous and special waste page covers who takes each.
Anything with a plug or a battery is WEEE and should never go in a household bin regardless — see WEEE disposal.
The alternative for van-sized loads
If you are in the south west with more than a car boot, the current choice is a cross-city trip to Dawsholm inside a three-and-a-quarter-hour window, or a collection.
We cover Govan, Cardonald, Hillington, Craigton, Ibrox, Pollok and Paisley-side, with no permit, no window and no carrying on your part. Loads start at £100 + VAT and we divert over 80% from landfill under our SEPA registration, WCR/R/3002381.
See rubbish removal in Glasgow, house clearance or man and van rubbish removal.
Glasgow's other recycling centres
Dawsholm is the van-accepting site. Polmadie serves the south side, cars only. Easter Queenslie is closed for redevelopment.
All four are covered together in our Glasgow recycling centres guide.
