How to Dispose of an Old Lawn Mower (2026 Guide)

An old mower is a lump of metal, a motor and — if it's petrol — leftover fuel and oil. Here's how to get rid of one properly, whether it's electric or petrol.

The short answer

No. An electric mower is WEEE (anything with a plug or a battery) and must be recycled; a petrol mower contains fuel and oil that need draining and handling as hazardous waste. Use a recycling centre or a collection service.

Mower and the rest of the shed to clear?

We take old mowers, garden tools and clutter from your door, drain and recycle them properly. Fixed price from a photo.

Electric and battery mowers = WEEE

An electric or cordless mower is electrical waste (WEEE), so it can't go in the general bin. Recycle it free at a household recycling centre, or hand it over with any other electricals for collection. Remove and recycle the battery separately if you can — batteries have their own recycling points.

Petrol mowers: drain the fluids first

A petrol mower needs prepping because the fuel and oil are hazardous:

  • Run the tank dry or siphon out the petrol into a proper fuel can
  • Drain the engine oil into a sealable container
  • Take the fuel and oil to a recycling centre's hazardous/oil point — never pour them away
  • The drained mower body is then mostly scrap metal

Scrap metal value

Once it's drained, a mower is largely steel and aluminium — good scrap. A scrap metal dealer may take it, and recycling centres accept it as metal. If it still runs, consider donating or selling it before scrapping.

Clearing the whole shed or garage?

Old mowers, strimmers, tools and timber — we take it all across Scotland and recycle the metal and green waste. Send a photo for a fixed price.

Recycle it separately — batteries have dedicated recycling points at recycling centres and many shops. Don't put batteries in general waste.
