Can you put electrical items in the bin?
No. Anything with a plug or a battery is classed as WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) and is marked with a crossed-out wheelie bin symbol — it's against the rules to put it in your general waste. Electricals contain metals and components that must be recovered, and some (like fridges and TVs) contain materials that need specialist handling.
The upside: almost all of it can be recycled, and there are several free routes in Glasgow.
Retailer take-back schemes
Under the WEEE rules, most electrical retailers must take your old item back when you buy a replacement — often free, sometimes collected on delivery of the new one. It's the easiest route for like-for-like swaps such as a washing machine, cooker or TV. Ask in-store or check the retailer's website before you buy.

Wipe your data first
Before you part with any device that stores data — laptops, phones, computers, even some printers and TVs — back up what you need, sign out of your accounts and do a full factory reset. For real peace of mind, remove and physically destroy the hard drive, or use a service (like ours) that offers secure data destruction.
