East Kilbride at a glance
The site is on the Peel Park Industrial Estate on the west side of East Kilbride, postcode G74 5LW. It is South Lanarkshire Council's busiest recycling centre and serves the whole town plus the villages around it.
Hours are seasonal. From April to September it opens 8am to 7pm Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm on Saturday and 8am to 5pm on Sunday. From October to March it is 8am to 5pm every day. It closes on Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
The last entry rule is the one to plan around: 15 minutes before closing, and the council's wording is that you will not be allowed entry after this time. A 4.50pm arrival in December is a wasted trip.

Booking is not optional
South Lanarkshire requires a booked slot for every visit to every one of its recycling centres, whatever you are driving. That is different from North Lanarkshire next door, where a car can turn up, and it is the single thing that catches East Kilbride residents out most.
Book through the council's online system before you load the car. Weekend slots go first, and the fortnight after Christmas is the hardest time of year to get one. The wider council picture, including the other sites, is in South Lanarkshire recycling centres.
There is no pedestrian access, children and pets stay in the vehicle, and smoking is banned on site. None of that is unusual, but it is enforced.
Renovation waste the site refuses?
We take the old kitchen, the bathroom and the rubble. Priced by the load, carried out for you.
Vans, trailers and tippers
East Kilbride accepts cars and vans up to 3.5 tonnes, and trailers under 2.4 metres by 1.2 metres. That makes it one of the more van-friendly sites in the west of Scotland, and it is why people from outside the council area sometimes try their luck. It is a residents' site, so do not.
Tipper vehicles are refused outright, whatever is in them. A twin-axle or oversized trailer is refused too. And a van still needs a booked slot like everything else. How the van rules compare across Scotland is in can you take a van to a Scottish recycling centre.
The Cambuslang and Rutherglen site runs on the same rules and is the nearer option for the north of the council area; it has its own page at Cambuslang and Rutherglen recycling centre.
What it takes and what it refuses
Accepted: green waste, cardboard, scrap metal, construction waste, bottles, jars and cans, paper, textiles, books, used motor oil, gas bottles, car batteries, electrical items, vapes and household batteries. Sort it before you go.
Refused: large industrial cylinders, household renovation materials, tradesperson waste and wheeled bins. The renovation and trade exclusions are the ones that bite: a bathroom you have ripped out yourself is household waste at some sites and refused at this one, so ask before you load a van with it. Trade waste is never accepted at a household site, as commercial vs domestic waste explains.
Old sofas and armchairs go in their own area under the upholstered seating rules. Anything with a lithium battery goes in the battery or electricals container, never general waste.
When to use us instead
If you can get a slot and it fits in the car, use the tip. It is free and it is the right answer for a boot-load. The calculation changes when the slots are gone, when it would take several trips, when the load includes the renovation waste the site refuses, or when it is a suite, a wardrobe or a washing machine that will not fit a car.
