Centres and recycling points
Dumfries and Galloway runs two distinct things, and it is worth knowing which you are heading to. **Recycling centres** are staffed sites taking the full household range. **Recycling points** are unstaffed banks taking a limited set of materials — usually glass, cans, paper and textiles.
Turning up at a recycling point with a car full of timber and old furniture is a wasted trip, and in a region this size a wasted trip is an expensive mistake.
Check locations, hours and any booking or permit requirement for your specific site on the council's recycling centres pages before setting off.
- Recycling centres take the full range
- Recycling points take limited materials
- Sites are widely spaced

Distance is the real constraint
Dumfries and Galloway is around 2,500 square miles with a population of about 148,000. From Stranraer, Newton Stewart, Kirkcudbright or the Machars, the nearest staffed recycling centre can be a serious drive.
That changes the arithmetic in a way it does not in a city. A free tip is only free if getting there costs nothing, and an hour each way plus fuel is not nothing — particularly repeated four or five times for a real clearance.
It also means the marginal load matters. In Glasgow, forgetting one item means a ten-minute return trip. In Galloway it can mean losing another half day.
An hour each way, four times over?
One collection instead. Stranraer to Annan, distance built into the price.
What the centres take
Staffed recycling centres take the standard household range: garden waste, timber, metal, rubble and hardcore, card and paper, plastics, glass, textiles, and electricals under WEEE (anything with a plug or a battery) including fridges and freezers.
Refused, as everywhere: asbestos, gas cylinders, bulk chemicals and solvents, clinical waste and tyres in quantity. Our hazardous and special waste page covers the right route for each.
Trade waste is not accepted, and in a farming region that is worth stating plainly: farm and croft waste is trade waste. See farm and agricultural clearance.
When to have it collected
If you are passing a centre anyway and have a boot load, use it. That is the honest answer and it does not change because we would rather sell you a collection.
Where it changes is volume and distance together. Anything that would take several runs, anything heavy enough to lift twice, anything that will not fit in a car, or any property far enough from a site that the round trip is most of a day.
We cover Dumfries, Stranraer, Annan, Castle Douglas, Newton Stewart, Lockerbie, Kirkcudbright and Moffat. Distance is built into the quote rather than being a reason to decline — that is the whole point of the service out here. Loads start at £100 + VAT with a transfer note every time.
