Barrhead at a glance
Barrhead Recycling Centre sits on Carlibar Road, a few minutes from the town centre and the railway station, and it is the site most East Renfrewshire households use. It is open every day of the year except Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
The hours move with the clocks. From 1 April to 30 September it opens 10am to 7.30pm, and from 1 October to 31 March it opens 8am to 5.30pm. The later summer opening surprises people who arrive at nine in June and find the gate shut.
It is a residents' site: East Renfrewshire Council runs it for East Renfrewshire households, and the booking system is how that is enforced. Check the council's page for the current hours before you set off, because they change for works and holidays.

You must book, even in a car
This is the rule that matters. The council's own wording is that you must not attend the site without a booking. It applies to every vehicle, including a car with two bags of garden waste in the boot. Slots are booked online through the council's website, and the quickest way to get one is the online form rather than the phone.
Slots go quickly on weekends and in the weeks after Christmas and Easter, so book before you start loading rather than after. If you need to cancel, the council asks you to call customer services on 0141 577 3001 during office hours, Monday to Friday 8.45am to 4.30pm.
The neighbouring council does it differently. Renfrewshire's Linwood and Paisley sites have their own rules, and driving from Barrhead to Linwood with a load only to be turned away is a wasted afternoon. Our guide to Renfrewshire recycling centres covers those.
Couldn't get a Barrhead slot?
We collect in Barrhead without one. Send a photo of the load and we'll price it in minutes.
Vans and trailers: not here
Barrhead does not accept vans or trailers at all. If you have hired a van for a clear-out, the site you need is Greenhags Recycling Centre in Newton Mearns, which has a separate booking page for vans and trailers. Book that before you hire anything, because the slots are limited.
That rule catches a lot of people mid-job. A house clearance in Barrhead, a garage emptied into a hired Transit, and then a gate that will not open. The picture across Scotland is in can you take a van to a Scottish recycling centre, and the short answer is that every council is different.
The Glasgow sites just over the boundary are not an alternative either. Glasgow's recycling centres are for Glasgow residents, and their van rules are covered in Glasgow recycling centres.
What Barrhead takes
The usual household streams: garden waste, cardboard, wood, scrap metal, soil and rubble, small and large electricals, fluorescent tubes and low-energy bulbs, car and household batteries, engine oil, gas bottles and canisters, and MDF, chipboard and laminates in a separate skip. Sort it before you go; a mixed boot takes twice as long at the bays.
Old sofas and armchairs are handled separately at Scottish recycling centres because of the rules on upholstered seating, so ask where they want it rather than putting it in general waste. Anything with a lithium battery goes in the battery or small electricals container, never the general skip, for the reasons in batteries and vapes in bin lorries.
Asbestos, commercial waste and trade loads are refused. The council's accepted list is on the site page linked below and it is the authority if this page and the gate disagree.
When the tip is the wrong tool
For a boot-load and a free slot, use the tip. It costs nothing and it is the right answer. It stops being the right answer when you cannot get a slot this week, when it would take three trips, when the load needs a van, or when it is a sofa, a wardrobe or a fridge that will not go in a car at all.
We come to the house in Barrhead, carry it out from wherever it is, load it ourselves and take it away the same visit, with no booking, no permit and no vehicle rule, because we are the licensed carrier rather than the visitor. A quarter load is £160 + VAT with the carrying included, and every collection comes with a transfer note under our SEPA registration, WCR/R/3002381.
