Three councils, three systems
**North Ayrshire** runs four household waste recycling sites. You can book a slot up to 14 days in advance, and same-day booking is available where slots remain. Slots are timed: 10 minutes for a car, 20 minutes for a car with a trailer or a van, including hire vans.
**East Ayrshire** is the strictest of the three. You need a Residents' Recycling Permit *and* a booking slot to enter. If you are driving a commercial-type vehicle — any van or pickup — or you are a resident in a hire vehicle, you must book an appointment.
**South Ayrshire** requires an e-permit, valid for 104 visits over 23 months, which then lets you book as and when you need. The sites no longer accept any vehicle that turns up without a booked slot.
- North Ayrshire: book up to 14 days ahead
- Car slots 10 min, vans 20 min
- East Ayrshire: permit AND booking
- South Ayrshire: e-permit, 104 visits / 23 months
- No booking = no entry, all three
- Vans inspected for trade waste
Vans get inspected
East Ayrshire states that all vans and trailers may be inspected on arrival to check no commercial waste is present. That is worth knowing if you are a tradesperson doing a favour for a relative, or a householder borrowing a work van.
The line councils draw is about the waste, not the vehicle. Household waste from your own home in a borrowed van is fine. Waste from a job is trade waste, and it needs a licensed carrier and a duty-of-care transfer note — see builders waste removal.
Getting that wrong at the gate means being turned away with the load still aboard. The rules across the rest of Scotland are in can you take a van to a Scottish recycling centre.
Permit not through, slot not free?
Ours is already sorted — WCR/R/3002381. Ayr to Largs, fixed price from a photo.
What the sites take
The standard household range at all three: garden waste, timber, metal, rubble and hardcore, card and paper, plastics, glass, textiles, and electricals under WEEE (anything with a plug or a battery) including fridges and freezers, degassed rather than crushed.
Refused: asbestos, gas cylinders, bulk chemicals and solvents, clinical waste and tyres in quantity. Our hazardous and special waste page covers the correct route for each.
Trade waste is refused at all three, and — as above — vans are checked.
When it is worth the trip
With a permit sorted and a slot booked, the tip is free and it is the right answer for a car load. Use it.
The maths changes when a 10-minute slot is not long enough to unload what you have brought, when the permit has not come through, when you have a van and no appointment, or when the load is heavy enough that you will lift it twice.
We cover Ayr, Kilmarnock, Irvine, Prestwick, Troon, Largs, Saltcoats, Cumnock and Girvan, with no permit, no slot and no time limit — we are the licensed carrier, so the gate rules are ours rather than yours. Loads start at £100 + VAT with a transfer note every time.
